The UConn-Avery Point Academic Center seeks Undergraduate Peer Tutors in all subjects for the spring semester of 2024. Freshmen entering in spring of 2024 can apply to start as tutors in the fall semester of 2024. Hours range from 2 to 5 hours per week based upon students’ schedules and availability. The starting rate is $16.19 per hour. Shift scheduling will complement your class schedule.
The core of the tutor position is providing tutoring support in specific academic subjects and general study skills to individual students in person and online. Besides that, Academic Center tutors gain a wide range of valuable professional experience. In this position, you’ll have the opportunity to create academic resources to be published on the Academic Center website and social media accounts; design and deliver workshops in writing, Q topics, and/or general study skills; lead review sessions in specific subjects; and follow through on your own ideas for new programs and services for Avery Point students. It’s a very flexible job that allows you to gain real leadership and professional experience in your fields of interest. A full-day orientation at the start of the semester and ongoing training will support you in setting and reaching your goals.
Typical characteristics of our tutors are:
- Strength in subject area(s) tutored.
- Ability and willingness to work in secondary subject areas.
- Strong listening and communication skills.
- Active interest in professional development and serving as a role model for Avery Point students.
- Completion of one semester of college prior to hire, preferably at Avery Point.
- Friendly and professional attitude.
- Good self-discipline and time management skills.

We are also looking to hire Front Desk Assistants (non-tutoring). This is a work-study position.
Duties:
- Develop a good knowledge of Academic Center tutors and resources.
- Work at the front desk in the Academic Center to assist with computer, room, tutor, and appointment management.
- Provide information to students, faculty, and staff regarding Academic Center services, policies, and procedures.
- Perform reception duties including greeting students and other visitors and introducing them to the Academic Center.
- Act as the main communication point person.
- Answer phone and take messages.
- Schedule appointments and keep current, detailed data on daily activities through the Nexus system.
- Oversee activity in the Academic Center to maintain a professional and welcoming atmosphere.
Typical characteristics of our front desk assistants are:
- Good problem-solving skills
- Strong organization skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks efficiently
- Outgoing, welcoming demeanor and ability to oversee a busy workspace
Starting rate for Deskers is $15.84/hour, and they work 3-7 hours per week.
